Praying for our Military

Supporting our troops through prayer is important. Learn several important things you can pray for during this time.
With the outbreak of the war, many people put their lives on hold to watch the events in Iraq as they unfolded. My husband insists on tuning in to CNN as our troops stand and fight each day in the desert. However, as Christians there is so much more that we can do than tuning in to news channels. We can pray for our troops, and that is far more important than attending pro-war or anti-war rallies, more important than sitting home and watching battles on TV. As our service men and women continue to fight for the freedom of Iraq and for the security of our nation, we should pray! It is one way that we can stand next to our nation’s troops spiritually.

We should pray for the safety of the men and women who are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world. No matter where our troops are serving they are serving our country and fighting to protect us and they are continuously on the threshold of danger. They need our prayers and support more than ever in these times.
Psalm 5:11, But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

We should pray for the families of those who’ve lost their lives in battle or in POW camps. What a tragic thing for America and other Coalition Forces to lose their heroes while fighting to protect us. We should keep the families of these men and women in our prayers as they mourn their losses and struggle to go on with their lives.
2 Corinthians 1:3-6, Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

We should pray for the families of our service men and women. We, civilians, cannot even imagine the constant fear that these families must face each day while their spouses, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters serve overseas. We should pray that they are comforted during this time and

their physical and spiritual needs will be met.
Phil 4:19, And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

We should pray for wisdom for our President and Chiefs of Staff who are making important decisions about the war, Iraq’s reconstruction, and our nation’s future.
2 Chronicles 1:10, Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?

We should pray for world leaders to make wise decisions in these very difficult times.
Proverbs 2:6-8, For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.

We should pray for the civilians in Iraq that their minds and bodies will be protected from the evil that has been tormenting them for years in their own country. We should also pray that they will peacefully receive the Coalition forces and that they will be prepared for the reconstruction of Iraq.
Genesis 26:28-29, Let us make a treaty with you that you will do us no harm, just as we did not molest you but always treated you well and sent you away in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD.

We should pray for people around the world for peace and protection even as the dispute regarding the war intensifies and as threats of terrorism increase.
Numbers 6:24-26, "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Sugar Creek Baptist Church is creating a Wall of Honor and Prayer including pictures and personal information about men and women who are serving our country through the military. If you would like to have your friend or family member included, please bring a photograph to the church office Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Our congregation will be praying for these men and women in our worship center throughout the week. In addition, every Wednesday evening, Sugar Creek hosts a prayer meeting and Bible study at 6:30 pm in our Chapel building. For more information about our prayer ministry, visit our website at www.sugarcreekbc.org or call 281-274-7435.
