Q: What are common warning signs of Diabetes?
A:
1. Increased thirst or hunger
2. Frequent urination
3. Extreme fatigue
4. Impotence
5. Blurred vision
6. Tingling or numbness of the feet or hands
7. Frequent skin, dental (gum), urinary or yeast infections
8. Infections, cuts or sores that are slow to heal

Q: What are some risk factors for Type-2 Diabetes?
A: It is important to find out early if you have diabetes because treatment can prevent further long-tem damage to the body. Check your risk for type 2 diabetes by checking each item as it applies to you.
- My parent, brother, or sister has diabetes?
- My family background is African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American/Latino?
- I have had gestational diabetes, or I gave birth to at least one baby weighing more than 9 pounds?
- High blood pressure - typically 140/90 or higher
- My cholesterol levels are not normal. My HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol) is 35 or lower, or my triglyceride level is 250 or higher?
- I exercise fewer than three times a week?

If you answered yes to any/all of these risk factor questions, and are seeing any of the above warning signs, visit a diabetes specialist for a consultation.

Q: Is there a way to prevent the onset of diabetes?
A: In a study conducted by the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), 3,234 people at high risk for diabetes showed that moderate diet and exercise resulting in a 5 to 7 percent weight loss can delay and possibly prevent type 2 diabetes.
